Sara was conducting her dissertation research in Iquitos, Peru when she was approached by a number of families who were interested in having her tutor their deaf children. She brought these families together for an initial meeting and the idea of forming a parents' association was born. Over the years, Sara has facilitated the formation of the deaf education program, built the collaborations with CEBA MORB and ISEP - Loreto, and provided financial and material support to the deaf education program. Her goal is for students who graduate from Periférico AIUS to one day become Teachers of the Deaf around Peru.
Sara currently works as a Teacher of the Deaf in the Los Angeles Unified School District Early Start (birth to 3-years-old) program for deaf and hard of hearing students. She also holds an Assistant Project Scientist position at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Center for Language, Interaction, and Culture.
