All proceeds are used to support the deaf education program, Periférico AIUS. Proceeds help pay for student transportation, school materials and activities, and to help pay for teacher salaries.
In Iquitos, there are no public school buses. Due to the fact that the school serves deaf students from around the city, the program supports families in need by providing free transportatoin to and from school.
Families in Iquitos pay for all school supplies and activities for their children because there are no school funds for such costs. For this reason, we support the deaf education program with materials including books and manipulatives that would be cost prohibitive for families to buy. In addition, we provide funds for activities such as the International Week of the Deaf and Graduation.
It has been an ongoing struggle with the local school district in Iquitos to ensure that the two deaf teachers have full 30-hour contracts. While we are happy to announce that 2024 was the first year that one of the two teachers received a full contract from the school that hosts the deaf education program, our second teacher still only has a partial contract. To ensure that the teachers are paid a fair salary, we cover the portion of the 30-hour salary that the teachers are not receiving.
